Helping Your Students with Paperwork
ALL students beginning a science fair project must fill out paperwork PRIOR TO experimentation. Follow these links to the short form for grades 5-8, and the lengthy ISEF forms for grades 9-12.
Again, ALL students will have forms to fill out that require appropriate signatures. These forms must be completed and signed BEFORE the student can move forward with the project. This is a matter of safety! Anyone who signs off on the form is stating that the project is appropriate and safe for the student to begin. That means that anyone signing the forms must know what the project is about, how the student will be conducting the measurements, if there are any risks involved, and make an informed decision on whether that student should continue. If there are concerns, those must be conveyed to the student and NO SIGNATURE given until the possible risks are mitigated.
These forms DO NOT register you for a science fair. Each fair will have its own registration process. You will receive registration instructions when you advance from each fair.

We recommend the paperwork process be started in the fall, allowing enough time to gather signatures and proceed with experimentation
How are mentors different from adult sponsors?
All students participating in science fair need to have an adult sponsor that is responsible for checking the student's work. That person will most likely be YOU, their teacher. It can also be a parent, another teacher, or someone else that student would like to help them.
A MENTOR, is only appropriate when you have an advanced student (usually only senior division) who is responsible, can work independently, and who is dependable. These students can seek out a professional, if needed, who is willing to mentor the student on advanced lab techniques or research. You may only have a couple of students who need a mentor.
